Washington D.C, November 13, 2024 - Forecasting Healthy Futures (FHF), a global consortium of organizations committed to protecting global health gains from the impact of climate change, is delighted to see the launch of the Baku COP Presidencies Continuity Coalition for Climate and Health announced today at COP29.
This groundbreaking coalition, which ensures that health considerations will be permanently embedded within the global climate agenda, was signed today by the WHO’s Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus along with Teymur Musayev, Minister of Health, Azerbaijan. Additional signatures will follow at the High Level Roundtable on Climate and Health, as part of the 18 November Health Day at COP29.
This Coalition brings together the ministers responsible for climate and health from the five previous, current and future host COP countries - the UK (COP26), Egypt (COP27), UAE (COP28), Azerbaijan (COP29), and Brazil (COP30) - as well as the World Health Organization (WHO). The concept for the Coalition arose during FHF’s Global Summit in June, where leadership from the five COP host countries and the WHO came together for a first-of-its-kind discussion on collaborating to elevate health on the climate agenda.
The Continuity Coalition will work to promote continued advocacy to advance the health argument within the climate change agenda, encourage future COP Presidencies to include health into their Action Agenda Initiatives, and leverage the collective experience of former COP Presidencies to recommend the most effective approaches for addressing health at subsequent COPs.
"It took 28 years to get health formally and firmly on the agenda at COP. This Continuity Coalition will ensure that it stays there, and that the world responds with clear, consistent, and urgent action to protect health in the context of climate change,” said Martin Edlund, Executive Director of Forecasting Healthy Futures. "We look forward to continuing to play a support role for the Coalition and helping to bridge to the broader global health and climate community at forthcoming Forecasting Healthy Futures Global Summits, including next April in Brazil.”
“Through its annual Global Summit, FHF has provided a critical platform for dialogue and action, including the announcement of the first-ever Health Day at COP28 during 2023’s Summit,” said Alison Malmqvist, Vice President, Global Fundraising and Communications at PSI. “Building on this success, in June this year, the Global Summit in Baku went one step further, providing the foundation for the COP Presidencies Continuity Coalition for Climate and Health at COP29. I am pleased to act as a member of the steering committee for FHF’s 2025 Global Summit.”
Planning is underway for the 2025 Forecasting Healthy Futures Global Summit, which will take place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in April.
